Senior Art Exhibit – SEU Fine Arts Gallery
Didn’t make this one. So close, yet so far.
Yellow Labyrinth – WTW
Labyrinth is a misnomer. There was no confusion or complication. Its like a piazza, very open. The multitude of doorways may have suggested a variety of choices, but since the space is not expansive they only removed the uncertainty of where they could lead. The cheerful yellow color and the comfort of knowing where the exit lays makes the space optimistic. It undercuts expectations set up by the definition of labyrinths. Then there’s this dealing with doorways as transitional spaces, a portal, someplace “in between”. The manifestation of the labyrinth only brings to question how intentional that interpretation is. The work felt meek. NOT BAD
2007 Juried Exhibition – The Design Center @ Penn Field
Always the shows closest to home. I missed this.
Jedediah Caesar – Workspace/ Blanton
Putting plywood on the floor really helped unify the installation. The physicality of the works provided an approachable understanding. It was garbage. No, really, it was. I caught a putrid odor and wondered why it smelled like a dumpster. Because he was dumping resin onto items pulled from his trashcan. GOOD
Joseph Phillips & Jared Theis – DBerman Gallery
I think this pairing was a little unbalanced. They both created imaginary worlds, but the tight renderings of Phillips overpowered the inanimate ceramics of Jared Theis. They looked like corals and abandoned cities like the cliff dwellings found in New Mexico. But Phillips hits a more immediate nerve with recent redevelopment and gentrification issues across the US. GOOD
+ OPPO – -Gallery Lombardi
Interesting contrast of textures on these paintings. Anderson paints flat colors in different compositions, while Smith’s encaustic paintings were textured like grimy build up. The show looked like wall decorations. It was disappointing since there was some interest in Anderson’s work in the biennial. oh well. BAD
Stale Mate of the BoozeFox or Boldly Going Nowhere – Mass Gallery
Beautiful. GREAT
Really what else do I need to say? A giant cardboard box spaceship sticking out of the gallery. Multiple points of entry lead you to a space alien. Crappy lo-fi construction linking directly to the crusty Millennium Falcon. It was awesome!
Over 21: Pages & Marginalia – Slugfest
I don’t know what they did as prints, but as drawings, I liked them. NOT BAD
Corners of The World – Tiru Gallery
I never made it out.
Coda (MFA 2) – Visual Arts Center (old Blanton/ Huntington Gallery)
Where the first batch was quiet, this group was dynamic. They really used up the space of the Huntington gallery. They was looking all professional and shit. GOOD
I’ll tell you ’bout what I sees.
