I’d say I’ve been pretty optimistic about Austin arts this year. So I was a little surprised by the news of AMOA’s new building.
My challenge for AMOA was clear when I read “the one museum in town that claims to be the city’s museum” on Capital A; join the Austin Children’s Museum in looking for a new home. They also went through the cycle of announcing plans then retreating. I suggested they look east. That’s what they are doing.
Does AMOA really need to be downtown? I’m thinking it would be alright for Austin’s museum of art to relocate to a site more accessible to Austin. That would leave Arthouse by itself downtown, but maybe the distance will give AMOA the chance to strengthen its identity. It could see that it is not in direct competition with the academic Blanton, nor the experimental Arthouse. It is a more general art museum and an entry point for a wider audience.
Find an affordable, accessible new location AMOA. The audience will follow.
I’ll tell you ’bout what I sees.
