This first week of July was like UT MFA week with grad students in most of the shows opening.
Liquid Days – DAC
Group show. Quiet. Pensive. Alison O’Daniel and Roberto Bellini left an impression. NOT BAD
Las Mujeres – La Pena
Some cliche latino imagery. Colorful fabric used akin to quiltmaking. A little bit of Donna Huanca and a little bit of Amali Amaki. Too much text for my taste. I want to say it was BAD, but there is experimentation happening. Ms. Zarco, kill your tv! Or break your canvas! Or use the whole sabana! Reshape or resize your work, cause right now the work is restrained. On the edge, but I felt some promise. NOT BAD
Summer Group Show – Lora Reynolds
If you’ve been visiting the gallery, you’ve seen most of the work. But the presentation of quality work by important contemporaries gets a thumbs up from me. NOT BAD.
Making It Alone – CRL
Lets see how many grads we can cram in here. Not to be an ass, but there were alot of artists and maybe not enough breathing room or relationships. NOT BAD
Active Disappearance – Okay Mountain
Photos, you know how I feel about them. The two artists that didn’t shoot people made me appreciate the two that did. Otherwise I would have blown them off. GOOD
Ars Ipsa/Resurfaced – Texas State Gallery 2
Haven’t seen it. You’d think I would have had the sense to swing by on my way back from San Antonio. But you give me too much credit.
I’ll tell you ’bout what I sees.
