January 2008 SeeSaws – Wk 1

First Night Austin – 2008
I got closer to seeing it this year. I told the kids we were going, they said they wanted to go. Between going to the office, taking naps and buying fireworks, we never made it. Maybe next year : /
Stamps of Approval – George Washington Carver Museum & [...]

November 2007 SeeSawS – Wks 3 & 4

Gail Busch/Dale Neese/Louis Katz – SEU Fine Art Gallery
Didn’t see it.
An Introduction to Mountain Making – Okay Mountain
Another year another show. The artists’ works are easy to identify. This year there’s new work with Ms. Sinks. NOT BAD
The Golem – Slugfest
It was a good set of prints. The drawings were frenetic. [...]

September 2007 SeeSawS – Wks 3 & 4

Surprise Me – Gallery Lombardi
Not the usual fair for the gallery. Half of the work was very colorful. I looked at those longer. NOT BAD
Embracing Chaos: YLA12 – MACC/ Mexic-Arte
I was disappointed. Not by the art. I mean, look at where the artists’ banners where placed at Mexic-Arte. Surely I’m [...]

August 2007 SeeSawS – Wks 1 & 2

Radical Nautical – Gallery Lombardi
Wowzers. There was a lot of people. It was a fun show and was glad to see the variety of work. The only thing I could possibly complain ’bout is that it was illustrator/designer heavy. But then again, where else will I see that work? GOOD
Suddenly [...]

June 2007 SeeSawS – Wks 4 & 5

Perspectivas – Volitant
The show was disappointingly thin. It was very outstretched and thus incomprehensible. BAD
6.07 Works – SVT Gallery
Very dreamy work. The paper work was quiet and the paintings immediately loud. Both were cryptic and I wish I could break into them more. They were just missing that element [...]

Apr 2007 SeeSaws – Wks 1 & 2

Senior Art Exhibit – SEU Fine Arts Gallery
Didn’t make this one. So close, yet so far.

Yellow Labyrinth – WTW
Labyrinth is a misnomer. There was no confusion or complication. Its like a piazza, very open. The multitude of doorways may have suggested a variety of choices, but since the space is not expansive [...]

Feb 2007 SeeSaws – Wk 4

Geometry of Hope – Blanton
This show was well organized. The progression through the gallery flowed naturally and the works kept changing without disrupting the evolution. Mathematical, making it brainy, but the optical ramifications made it accessible. Playing “Spaghetti & Meatballs” with the Soto is fun. GOOD
Freaks of Nurture – WTW
This was Elaine Bradford pushing [...]

Jan 2007 SeeSaws – Wks 2 & 3a

Retreat – WTW
I wrote a review in the Chronicle that pretty much covered what I was thinking. The jaggedy shapes were interesting, but they lost all mystique when I found out they were images from caverns. So all of those lines weren’t responses or tools to disrupt the image, they were actual contours. [...]

Whitney Lee: Powercraft – WTW

I wrote a review for the Chronicle a couple of weeks ago.
Although I express my thoughts, I felt like there was a bigger discussion possible. Weeks before there was the hoopla in New York ’bout the Splasher. Then the “Clean City” Law went into effect in Sao Paolo. Both events lingered as [...]

Theresa Marchetta: Retreat – Women and Their Work

Oh! The Chronicle has a new, cleaner look!
If you’ve already seen it, then this will look familiar:
Front and center, the first painting welcomes you into the gallery with a compact, yet strong and bright presence. The vivid color and black outlines make the piece look like cloisonné or stained glass. But what you’re looking at [...]
