July 2007 SeeSawS – Wks 2 & 3

“Untitled” Group Drawing Show – Else Madsen
I remember sneaking in before the opening. I do remember leaving apathetic. I don’t remember the works, though.

Re-Imagining the Nude – New East Gallery
There was nudity. Mostly nipples in the usual designy photography. BAD

Aldo Valdes Bohm: New Works – Art Palace
Very fine woodworking. Artisanal. NOT BAD

Tabletop Sculpture – Art Palace
I’m still thinking ’bout this show, so points for that. I mean, I am really thinking ’bout it! (And I refuse to read the catalogue until I figure out how I feel ’bout the show) Erin Curtis upstaged the sculptors. The gallery was unrecognizable! At the time, some of the sculptures were succumbing to the environment while others held their own and piqued investigations. Looking back (after months of contemplation), all of the pieces played their part. Having sculptures that were either models for a larger incarnation, modeled after a larger version, or singular in execution placed inside a venue that slips back, forth and in between a house and an art gallery made things very disorienting. Questions of purpose and the relationship of placement dance with ideas of merchandising and perception. Who is the audience? Where does interaction take place? Who becomes the owner and how does context affect the meaning?  Was the whole show an artwork?

I think I’ll go read that catalogue now. GOOD

Tom Hollenbach & Joseph Janson – DBerman Gallery
Janson was bad and unnecessary. Hollenbach was looking sharp, but after a year of seeing his work up and down I-35 there has been mild growth. BAD

F.A.M. fest – F.A.M. @ Pump Project Art Complex
I’m sorry I missed this : [

AMODA @ Volitant
No money, me no show up honey. Sorry.

Interchange (pt 2) – CRL
Not quite “The Empire Strikes Back”, but still intriguing. I’ve allowed myself to admit my pleasure instead of withholding judgment. Two for two, lets see how the third one fairs.

I’ll tell you ’bout what I sees.
